Can You Use Degreaser Wipes on Hydraulic Fittings?

18 Jun 2026 · Purion

Plant fitter cleaning hydraulic fittings on heavy equipment

Yes — degreaser wipes are well suited to cleaning hydraulic fittings and lines, as long as you clean from the outside in and never introduce material into an open port. The risk with hydraulics is never the wipe. It's contamination ingress: a single particle or fibre driven past a seal can score a valve or block an orifice downstream. Technique is everything.

Why hydraulic fittings are sensitive

Hydraulic systems run to fine tolerances. Contaminants that look harmless on a bench — grit, lint, a smear of old grease — become abrasive or blocking once they're inside the circuit. Most hydraulic failures trace back to contamination, not wear. So the goal when cleaning a fitting is simple: remove the contamination on the outside, and add none on the inside.

Why a degreaser wipe suits the job

A purpose-built degreaser wipe carries its own measured chemistry, so you're not splashing solvent around open fittings. It's lint-controlled, so it won't shed fibres onto a sealing face. And it holds together wet, so it lifts grease in one pass instead of breaking up against a sharp edge. That combination — dosed, low-lint, strong — is exactly what fitting cleaning needs.

How to do it right

  • Clean before you crack the fitting. Remove external grease and grime while the joint is still closed, so nothing falls in when you open it.
  • Work outside in. Wipe the surrounding surface first, then the fitting itself, finishing at the connection point — never the reverse.
  • Use a fresh face. Fold to a clean section as you go. A loaded wipe just redeposits what you removed.
  • Cap open ports. The moment a line or port is open, it's exposed. Cap or plug it; never leave it to "wipe later".
  • Don't push material into the joint. Clean to the edge of the opening, not into it.

What to avoid

Skip shop rags here — a laundered rag carries grit and sheds fibre, the two things a hydraulic circuit cannot tolerate. Skip paper towel too; it pills and tears against fitting threads. And avoid flooding open fittings with aerosol solvent, which carries contamination inward as it runs off.

The wipe isn't the risk. Contamination ingress is. Clean closed joints first, work outside in, and cap every open port.

Which Purion wipe

For hydraulic fittings, drivetrain components and engine-bay work, the M2 degreasing wipe is the one — solvent-led, textured, and built to lift heavy grease and oil in a single pass. Follow with M1 for hands once the heavy work is done.
