Industrial Wipes vs Shop Rags vs Paper Towel

25 Jun 2026 · Purion

Purion M1, M2 and M3 industrial wipes

Three options clean a workshop: industrial wipes, shop rags and paper towel. They look interchangeable. They aren't. Each fails differently, and the wrong choice costs you in contamination, re-dos or torn product mid-job. Here's the straight comparison.

Shop rags

Cheap to start, familiar, reusable. But a laundered rag carries old grit and grease into the next job, the quality is inconsistent, and oily rags become a regulated waste and fire risk. Good for soaking up a spill. Risky on any surface where contamination matters.

Paper towel

Clean and disposable, no laundry. But it tears under pressure, pills into lint, and has no chemistry of its own — so it smears grease rather than lifting it. Fine for a quick wipe of clean hands. Out of its depth on heavy soil.

Industrial wipes

Engineered for the job: a strong non-woven substrate that holds together wet, dosed with the right chemistry to lift grease and oil, sized to cover hands, tools and components, and disposable so nothing recirculates. Higher unit cost, lower cost per clean.

Unit price is the wrong number. Industrial wipes cost more each and less per job once you count contamination, re-dos and disposal.

The verdict

There's a place for all three. Keep paper towel for light, clean work and rags for soaking spills. But for anything where contamination, grease or a finished surface matters — engine bays, hydraulics, hands, glass, components — a purpose-built industrial wipe does it once, cleanly, with nothing carried over. That's where the cost per clean drops and the re-dos stop.
